Who We Are

INSIDE:INSIGHT is an EU Doctoral Network funded under Horizon Europe’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme focused on developing educational technologies and applications in the biomedical field.

INSIDE:INSIGHT will shape the coming generation of scientists in a well-structured and comprehensive manner to elevate Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) and will contribute to advancements in healthcare delivery, digital literacy, enhancing inclusivity and equal opportunities in medical and healthcare education

INSIDE:INSIGHT is a global consortium spanning 9 countries across Europe, Canada, and New Zealand. Comprising 12 multidisciplinary partners, including 10 universities and 2 industrial collaborators, the initiative offers exceptional training opportunities for early-career researchers.

Our comprehensive program bridges expertise in biomedical, computer, and educational sciences, equipping participants with mastery in key areas such as educational theories and technologies, human anatomy, computer vision, biomedical engineering, medical imaging, and surgical innovation.

NEED

Europe faces a rising demand for skilled health professionals, but current educational systems struggle to meet this need.

Challenges include accommodating large and diverse student groups, updating curricula, and providing adaptable, high-quality teaching materials.

While technology (e.g., XR, AR, VR) offers promising solutions, there is limited understanding of how these tools affect learning and emotions in health education.

Educators and students also lack the necessary digital skills to fully leverage these technologies.

Impact

Implementing technology-enhanced learning (TEL) can transform medical and healthcare education.
For example:
XR tools can improve 3D understanding, crucial for anatomy, medical imaging, and clinical procedures.

Realistic simulations can help students and professionals prepare for emergencies in a safe, controlled environment.

Remote and flexible learning options increase inclusivity and scalability, reaching more diverse learners and reducing costs. This project will develop and evaluate TEL to better prepare health professionals, improve learning experiences, and meet the growing demand for skilled healthcare workers.

Challenges

  • Diverse learner needs: Students and health professionals have varied educational goals, requiring tailored tools and methods.
  • Digital literacy: Many educators and learners lack the skills to effectively use advanced technologies.
  • Complex implementation: Adapting curricula to integrate XR and similar tools without disrupting existing systems is challenging.
  • Limited research: There’s insufficient evidence on the cognitive and emotional impact of TEL, making it harder to guide its effective use.

By addressing these challenges, INSIDE:INSIGHT aims to develop user-friendly, impactful learning technologies and bridge the gap in digital education for health professionals and students.

SOLUTION

Within the INSIDE:INSIGHT consortium, the 10 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) will be actively engaged in developing and/or evaluating technology enhanced learning approaches.

This will require an interdisciplinary skill set, combining expertise from computer sciences, engineering, biomedical and educational sciences. At the same time, a comprehensive doctoral training programme will ensure that the 10 DCs receive training in transferable skills that are particularly relevant for this project.

This will, amongst others, include: ethics of visualisation, bio-ethics, ethics of AI, intellectual property rights, collaborative learning, mentoring, entrepreneurship.
